The new Alienware m15 gaming laptop is destroying its own RTX 3070 GPU
Editor’s Note June 11, 2021: Dell contacted us, stating: “Last week we discovered that the new Alienware m15 gaming system is limiting CUDA cores in a 3070 configuration. We released a firmware update to resolve incorrect settings. Visit our support page. Here About updated vBios. Alienware m15 owners should be able to get the full power out of their laptop. The original story continues below.
Dell’s latest Alienware m15 gaming laptop announced that Mars-themed machines will abandon Intel in favor of using the AMD Ryzen 5000 series, the first Alienware portable to use AMD processors since 2007. Recently attracted attention.
The spotlight may not have supported it, as some m15 models were found to report 4,608 CUDA cores for GeForce RTX 3070 graphics cards instead of the standard 5,120. This is a “mistake” that appears to be a deliberate design choice. By Dell.
This issue was first reported on the YouTube channel by Jarrod’s Tech. Benchmarks showed that the m15 R5 benchmark was suspicious of the machine when it did not correlate with other results for gaming laptops using RTX 3070 hardware.
After contacting Dell directly, the decision to use a GPU was made by the engineering team after “careful testing and design selection for the most stable and best performance possible”. As previously confirmed, he also said that more CUDA cores are possible. You can unlock it in a future update.
Since then, Tom’s Hardware has also contacted Dell, revealing that the limit is actually an error and a fix is being developed for the mid-July release.
“We found that improperly configured Alienware vBIOS limits the CUDA cores in the RTX 3070 configuration. This is an error we are working hard to fix as soon as possible. It will be resolved as early as mid-June. For the time being, we do not recommend using another Alienware platform vBios to fix this issue. We apologize for the inconvenience. We apologize. “
The truth is out there
Some users using Reddit threads started fixing the problem themselves by flashing the RTX3070 VBIOS of the m15R4 to the new m15R5, but the fix will start soon, so until the July update. Postpone or wait. If the device is still in the basket, buy the device.
VideoCardz also points out in its report that the core crippled 10% reduction has never been mentioned on a website that weights Dell’s claim that this is a mistake. Mobile GPUs list important information such as power TGP (total power consumption) and clock speed.
The overall situation is very unusual, but it’s unlikely to cause long-term performance issues, given that people who already own a laptop can easily fix the problem manually. If Nvidia gives manufacturers free control over clock speed and power to extend battery life or keep thermals tolerable, it makes little sense to intentionally cut the CUDA core.
The Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 is available from $ 1,794 (approximately £ 1,300, $ 2,350 AU). You can choose either AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX or Ryzen 7 5800H, and either RTX 3060 or RTX 3070 Nvidia mobile GPU.
