HIGHLIGHTS

  • HMD may be working on a new 5G phone called Nokia XR20.
  • There is also a tablet with Android OS that has emerged on certification website.
  • HMD has not said anything official on the launch of phone and tablet.

HMD recently launched the brand-new X-series of Nokia phones. The Nokia X20 and Nokia X10 come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 processor, bringing 5G capabilities at mid-range prices. A new Nokia phone has now emerged on the Geekbench benchmarking website, and it will be the third one in a row to have a low-cost 5G processor. And not just a new phone, HMD is also likely working on its first Nokia tablet that will run Android.

This new Nokia 5G phone is dubbed Nokia XR20 for some reason, so it is hard to tell if it will belong to the X-series or if there is a new series in the making. According to the Geekbench platform, the Nokia XR20 will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset inside, which means there is going to be 5G support. The Nokia XR20 will have 4GB of RAM and run on Android 11 software out-of-the-box. This means the Nokia XR20 could be a budget phone, but I am not sure if it will be a toned-down variant of the Nokia X20.

The above information aside, there is nothing else available about the Nokia XR20 at this point. Earlier this year, HMD said it would launch more 5G phones at different price points, but whether any of them will come to India is a bigger question. HMD still does not sell any 5G phones in India, which, although makes sense from a pragmatic perspective, is not in line with what its rivals are doing in India. Xiaomi, Realme, Samsung, and OnePlus are inundating the Indian market with 5G smartphones left, right, and centre. The lack of a 5G phone from Nokia is repelling potential customers.

HMD will talk more about this phone as the launch of this phone inches closer, but till now we will have to make do with the rumours.

There is also a Nokia tablet that HMD is seemingly working on. According to a report by NokiaPowerUser, HMD has got new TA-1392 and TA-1397 models on Russia’s certification platform. Both these models belong to a single Nokia tablet that is in the offing. If true, this will be HMD’s first Nokia tablet. There are no images or photos available in the listings, so I am not sure what the Nokia tablet would look like. The specifications of the Nokia tablet, such as the display, processor, and battery, are also not clear right now. To recall, Nokia launched the Nokia N1 Android-powered tablet back in 2014.
