Android to iPhone, iPhone to Android is going to be easy with rumoured WhatsApp chat backup feature
Despite covering technology for all these years, if there’s one question that I always feared that might come from friends, family, colleagues, or people who generally reached out, how to transfer WhatsApp chats from Android to iOS or vice versa. Yes, that became a question that I wish had a simpler answer to until now.
With the latest report from WABetaInfo, I’m slightly relieved. However, the website is a very reliable source of info around WhatsApp, but still, some features take years to be finally out or never make it. Anyways, simply the idea of WhatsApp finally giving chat migration between two platforms a thought is enough to hint that we may finally get it sooner or later.
As per a screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is seen testing a feature that will let users move chat history to Android from iPhone and of course, it will work for Android to iPhone as well. The screenshot shows a screen that notifies that the user needs to be on the latest version of the app to transfer chat history.
Now, users will have to understand that the chat history migration between Android and iOS is part of WhatsApp’s multi-device support feature, or should we say an extension. The best part about the multi-device support is users may soon be able to use the same WhatsApp account on multiple devices, including multi-platforms (which means it will work across Android and iOS).
Why chat migration is a big deal?
The chat migration is one of the biggest worries at the moment for WhatsApp users who want to switch their devices from iOS to Android or vice versa. Both platforms use different cloud backup sources, which makes it really hard for the user to retrieve any chats. For those unaware, the Android version uses Google Drive, while the iOS version uses iCloud.
It is a big deal at the moment because a lot of WhatsApp rivals support chat migration across devices and platforms. Telegram, for example, doesn’t need any complex way to work on Android or iOS for the same account. But, yes, it stops working on an active device if the user activates Telegram on another one regardless of Android or iOS platforms which is a security feature.

WhatsApp chat migration: There are third-party apps that claim to work, but they’re all hit or miss
Many users may have already done their homework and might be saying right now that there are a few apps that offer ways to migrate your WhatsApp chat history between Android and iOS. But nothing guarantees success. In fact, a lot of these apps are paid, which means someone may end up paying despite the third-party app failing to transfer chats between the two platforms.
Not many people know, but WhatsApp clearly says that apps claiming to move chat history between phones violate their Terms of Service.
The support page notes, “Unsupported apps, such as WhatsApp Plus, GB WhatsApp, or apps that claim to move your WhatsApp chats between phones, are altered versions of WhatsApp. These unofficial apps are developed by third parties and violate our Terms of Service. WhatsApp doesn’t support these third-party apps because we can’t validate their security practices.”
WhatsApp chat migration between iOS and Android: No timeline as of now
As always, with upcoming WhatsApp features, there’s no timeline when the feature will be made available for the general public. But considering the messaging company has started exploring the feature, we might see the chat migration option in the future beta update.
WhatsApp’s one of the most demanded feature was Dark Theme, and it took a reasonable time before it was rolled out for everyone. We can expect a similar delay for such a big feature, which will enhance WhatsApp using experience and make it on par with some of its rivals.
